Gold’s got secrets

Prices for precious metals, along with just about everything else, depend on the relative levels of supply and demand plus available inventories.
In judging where gold and silver prices are likely to trend, investors and numismatists alike have an interest in knowing if there are current and likely future supply shortages or surpluses. Two consultancies that produce the most widely cited analyses of precious metals markets are GFMS (formerly called Gold Fields Mineral Services) and CPM Group (headed by Jeffrey Christian)

Repeal sales taxes

The Michigan state government subjected coins and precious metals bullion to state sales tax until mid-1999. I can’t tell you how many times before then that incredulous would-be customers asked, “You mean there is sales tax on money?”How much are you willing to pay in sales tax on a coin? Before Michigan adopted its coin and bullion sales tax exemption, my company rarely (maybe once a year) made in-state retail sales of such merchandise where the customer spent at least $5,000. Now that these items are exempt from the state’s sales tax, about 94 percent of our in-state retail sales volume comes from transactions of $5,000 or more

Proposed French law impacts coin finds

How difficult is it to strike coins?

Last week, I described the announced plans of the Middle East terrorist group ISIS to strike and issue gold, silver and copper circulating coinage where the gold and silver coins would trade on the basis of their intrinsic metal value.Whether there will actually ever be any ISIS coinage is a coldly logistical question. Some general and also numismatic media covered the same announcement with predictions that the difficulty of creating dies, acquiring the presses, acquiring quality metal or coin blanks and producing them in large enough quantities makes it unlikely any such coins will ever be issued

Swap gold for silver?

There have been several opportunities since the 1979-1980 gold and silver boom where the gold/silver ratio was so distorted that it was possible to trade out of one metal into the other to realize a possible gain when the ratio turned around.Since the end of 1980, the gold/silver ratio has been anywhere from about 30:1 to 90:1. At last Friday’s closes, the ratio exceeded 74:1

Gold for profit or wealth preservation?

There seems to be some confusion among buyers of bullion-priced precious metals as to their motivation for making such purchases.  Are they buying gold and silver to preserve their wealth indefinitely through diversification (which I refer to as owing precious metals for insurance purposes)? Or are they thinking in terms of seeking a profit, meaning that they are planning to sell at some point at a higher price – however they define it?I believe that many people are thinking of the insurance aspect of owning physical precious metals as protection against possible future calamities with paper assets such as stocks, bonds and currencies. It no longer surprises me when our customers tell us that they plan never to sell the gold and silver they are purchasing, but intend to leave it to their heirs

Coin, paper money prices change constantly

Numismatic price guides and reporting services are just that – guidance on value rather than absolute guarantees of price. In even the best circumstances, there is not any single price guide or reporting service that can tell a collector or a dealer what any particular coin or piece of paper money is worth right now.Part of the problem with relying on annual catalogs and even the weekly price guides is that there is always a time lag between calculating values and that same information being published

Coins similar to British £2 cause concern

When you consider how many different coins are issued worldwide it is amazing there aren’t more coin types that are identical in weight and diameter that could be used in vending machines in some other country.Although the British £2 coin has been around since 1998, it now appears some individuals are taking advantage of the fact the ringed bimetal coin is similar to some lower value foreign coins that these individuals have been using as substitutes. The problem has become sufficiently widespread that the West Midlands Morrisons grocery store announced during mid-June that it was suspending the acceptance of £2 coins at its self-service checkout counters
