The Bank of Estonia has unveiled (9th June) designs for next year’s silver Proof collector coins which will honour prominent statesman Friedrich Karl Akel (1871–1941), on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his birth. Akel was an Estonian diplomat and politician, a member of the International Olympic Committee, and in 1924 he was named as state elder, which was the official title of Estonia’s head of state from 1920 to 1937

The Bank of Estonia has unveiled (17th June) the successfully submitted design for planned €15 silver coins to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Estonian statesman Juri Jaakson (1870–1942), who emerged as a prominent figure before and after Estonian independence in 1918. During the outbreak of the Second World War, and while in the position of president of the Bank of Estonia, Jaakson was arrested by the occupying Soviet authorities and imprisoned on the 14th June 1941

The Bank of Estonia has unveiled (14th June) the design that has been approved to mark the bicentenary anniversary of the first discovery of Antarctica, which will be celebrated in 2020. The bank chose the design submitted by graphic artists Tiiu Pirsko and Mati Veermets, who have previously designed Estonian coins marking the centenary anniversary of the Republic of Estonia and the silver collector’s coin issued for the Estonian Song Festival in 2009

The Bank of Estonia unveiled (2nd May) the winning design for next year’s commemorative €2 coin which is scheduled to be issued in celebration of the centenary anniversary of the Tartu Peace Treaty. Signed on the 2nd February 1920, the treaty formally recognised Estonian independence, which was won after the Baltic nation fought a war against Russia, following the abdication of Czar Nicholas II in 1917 and the eventual break-up of the Russian Empire

Estonia announces competition to design a coin dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of statesman Jaan Tõnisson
The Bank of Estonia (Eesti Pank) have announced (22nd December) a competition to design a silver collector coin which will be dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Estonian statesman Jaan Tõnisson, (1868-1941). Tõnisson is remembered as having served as the prime minister of Estonia twice during 1919 and 1920, as Estonia’s head of state from 1927 to 1933, and as foreign minister of Estonia from 1931 to 1932
