The Low Country Coin Club introduced an interesting twist on “Show ‘n’ Tell” for their first meeting in May, an “Ugly Coin Contest,” according to a report presented in the June 2019 issue of The Scanner, the South Carolina Numismatic Association’s quarterly journal. Club members presented nine coins for consideration, with all in attendance that evening being accorded the opportunity to “examine the coins and vote for their choice” of the ugliest character depicted on a coin or currency issue. Member Zack Macauley’s “clear-cut winner” was West Germany’s 2-Mark issue minted from 1988 to 2001, depicting Chancellor Ludwig Erhard, first released in observance of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Federal Republic following World War II

It has launched a new interface for Online Coins of the Roman Empire (OCRE), which allows non-specialists, hobbyists, collectors, archaeologists, and others to browse Roman Imperial coins by image for free online.

The American Numismatic Society, in collaboration with the British Museum and the Münzkabinett of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, has launched another major tool to aid in the identification, research and cataloging of the coins of the ancient world.Coinage of the Roman Republic Online (CRRO) continues the precedent set by Online Coins of the Roman Empire (OCRE) in presenting, in an easily searchable form, all the varieties of the coinage issued in the Roman Republic. Six online collections containing over 20,000 specimens of Roman Republican coinage spread across 2,300 coin types, in addition to hundreds of hoards from Coin Hoard of the Roman Republic  (CHRR) and additional individual find spots provided by Berlin are now available for research

CSNS awards funds to six authors

The Central States Numismatic Society has awarded grants totaling $20,000 to six numismatic authors to research and publish information on topics ranging from elongated coins to early half dollars.CSNS Education Director Ray Lockwood, who oversees the authors grant program, said, “This four-year old program has proven to be one of the most successful education programs ever undertaken by CSNS.” To date, it has provided grants to 21 authors and researchers
