This year’s recipient of the Coin of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award, Finnish sculptor, coin and medal designer Reijo Paavilainen, actually began his artistic career as a painter. Bank of Latvia’s 2018-dated Honey Coin, a gold-plated silver 5 euro, has been named the 2020 Coin of the Year.
The day was sweet as honey for the Bank of Latvia when its 5-euro Honey Coin was given top honors as 2020 Coin of the Year during an awards ceremony held Feb. 1 in conjunction with the World Money Fair in Berlin, Germany

It’s that time of year again! Time to start the process of narrowing down nominations for the Coin of the Year Program. Australian coins came out on top, earning a total of nine nominations in eight different categories, as the 37th annual Coin of the Year (COTY) program kicked off with nominee selection of 2018-dated coins.
The awards competition, presented by World Coin News and sponsored by The Journal of East Asian Numismatics, begins each year when the COTY Nomination Committee convenes to select the nominees

Our Thirty-Sixth Annual Coin of the Year Awards Ceremony took place Feb. 2 in Berlin at the World Money Fair
The World Money Fair once again played host to this year’s Coin of the Year awards, which recognises excellence in world coin issues over a selection of 10 categories and topics. As part of the presentations during the World Money Fair, the COTYs are one of the most anticipated events during the nearly week-long event, and are attended by industry experts, media, and invited guests
Powerhouses or up-and-comers? Who should get the lion’s share of attention as the 100 nominations for Coin of the Year are discussed?
Perennial powerhouse Canada came away with nine nominations on the list that begins the competition to determine the winner of the 2019 Coin of the Year Award, which is sponsored by World Coin News, sister publication to Numismatic News.
It was followed by eight nominations for Australia and six for the People’s Republic of China.
Other historically strong contenders Finland, France, and South Africa registered five nominations each
