The new president of the European Central Bank took part in a ceremony (27th November) in which she added her signature to a ceremonial display banknote, further solidifying her tenure as the head of the European Central Bank. Christine Lagarde, former head of the International Monetary Fund and a French national, was nominated in July 2019 and confirmed in September as the Central Bank’s new president for an eight-year non-renewable term

European Union: European Central Bank announces discontinuation of €500 banknotes
The European Central Bank (ECB) has announced that as of the 27th January 2019, 17 of the current 19 members of the euro-zone will no longer issue or distribute the €500 denomination banknote. The ECB has confirmed that both the Austrian National Bank and the German Bundesbank will however continue to both print and distribute the discontinued denomination until the 26th April in order to ensure a smooth transition and for logistical reasons
European Central Bank unveils new €200 and €100 banknotes as part of current Europa series
The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled (17th September) their two remaining denominations that will undergo an update in terms of design and security features. Begun in 2015 with the €5 banknote, the ECB introduced the new “Europa” series which updated the designs that were in use since the first euro-denominated banknotes entitled “Ages and Styles,” designed by Robert Kalina, that went into circulation on the 1st January 2002
