How Has the COVID-19 Pandemic Affected Collecting?

There is no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 has changed everyday life in the United States, and indeed the world, in countless ways. How we collect probably qualifies as a pretty small change, but nevertheless, this pandemic will most likely color how we go about assembling collections of great coins, bank notes, and medals for years and possibly decades to come. We thought it might be a good idea to query some of the people most actively involved in our hobby to see what is different for them, to see what has become more of a challenge, and to see if there might actually be any upsides or strange pluses to an event that put most of the world on lock-down in 2020

Clear-Cut Winner of the Ugly Coin Contest

The Low Country Coin Club introduced an interesting twist on “Show ‘n’ Tell” for their first meeting in May, an “Ugly Coin Contest,” according to a report presented in the June 2019 issue of The Scanner, the South Carolina Numismatic Association’s quarterly journal. Club members presented nine coins for consideration, with all in attendance that evening being accorded the opportunity to “examine the coins and vote for their choice” of the ugliest character depicted on a coin or currency issue. Member Zack Macauley’s “clear-cut winner” was West Germany’s 2-Mark issue minted from 1988 to 2001, depicting Chancellor Ludwig Erhard, first released in observance of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Federal Republic following World War II

60 Years Is Too Long To Be Without a Logo

The Saint John Coin Club of New Brunswick, Canada, formally celebrated the 60th anniversary of its 1959 founding at a special reception hosted on the eve of its annual coin show, which was held on May 26. Coincident with celebrating its 60th anniversary, the club had held a design contest to develop an official logo, according to the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association’s May 2019 issue of its RCNA NumisNotes monthly electronic newsletter
