Poland: Silver crown coin salutes decisive and epic Battle of Hodów

The National Bank of Poland has issued (6th June) new collector silver coins which mark one of Poland’s most epic and decisive battles that was fought between the Kingdom of Poland and Crimean Khanate forces in June 1694 in the Ruthenian Voivodeship, or, the Principality of Galicia–Volhynia. The battle has been compared by historians and military tacticians as the “Polish Thermopylae,” inasmuch as the valiant defenders of Hodów were compared to the 300 Spartans defending Thermopylae

Poland: Exquisite gold and silver coins issued in ongoing Historical Kings series, featuring Sigismund II Augustus

The National Bank of Poland have issued (7th December) two new coins in their ongoing and popular coin series entitled “The Treasures of Stanislaw August” which highlights the succeeding monarchs of the Polish state from the year 992 and the reign of King Bolesław Chrobry to the last Polish King Stanisław August Poniatowski, whose reign came to an end in 1795.
The 13th coin of this popular and continuing series focuses on Sigismund II Augustus (also known as Zygmunt II August), son of Zygmunt I and Bona Sforza d’Aragona, who was the last independent grand duke of Lithuania from 1529, and king of Poland

Poland: Founding member of National Committee, Roman Dmowski, featured on new gold and silver coins

The National Bank of Poland have issued (8th November) two new coins which were minted in remembrance of Poland’s momentous day in November 1917 when an independent Polish state was on the road to being recognised after more than 146 years of living under the yoke of various European empires and kingdoms. Statesman Roman Dmowski played an important role in the organising of a National Committee that became the governing body which first saw recognition by the European powers as Poland’s legitimate representation before independence was formally recognised in November 1918
